The Conservation Commission consists of seven
appointed members and focuses on issues related
to the environment and natural resources of the
community. It is dedicated to the protection of the air, water, and land.
During the past year, the Commission has continued
its efforts to preserve and protect open space in
the town. Following several months of research and
discussion related to the Green Cities Initiative, which
is an outgrowth of the Kyoto Treaty, the Conservation
Commission urged the Board of Selectmen to act
on several recommendations regarding recycling,
hybrid cars, energy audits for town buildings, and
the purchase of electricity from renewable energy
sources.
The Commission remains involved in efforts to
protect ground water through its cooperation with
the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center
in New Haven. We supply advertising and volunteers
on two Saturdays during the summer and fall.
We devoted the first few months of 2009 to planning the first annual North Haven Earth Day celebration.
The Commission sponsored the event and worked
with members of the Land Trust and the High School
Project Green group to organize the celebration,
which was held at the Middle School on April 25.
Numerous environmental groups, green businesses,
and youth groups participated, and more than 200
people attended.
