As a suburban town, North Haven has an abundance of single family homes. While a majority of these homes are owner occupied, some are utilized as investment properties. Accordingly, the Land Use office fields many inquiries regarding the rental of single family homes.
The regulation of rental of homes in North Haven is established in part by the definition of a “family”, which states that no more than “three (3) persons keeping house together, and not necessarily related by blood or marriage, may be considered a family”. In other words, no more than three unrelated people may inhabit a single family home. This includes student housing. There is no zoning limit, however, regarding the number of related individuals who can inhabit a single family home.
If you own, or are thinking about renting, a single family home, please do so in compliance with the zoning regulations to avoid undo hardship for tenants in case of enforcement action. The Land Use office is available to answer questions from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday-Friday. We look forward to hearing from you. Please call 203-239-5321, ext. 440.
