Community Volunteering

Community Volunteering/Outreach is an important and meaningful facet of volunteering for members. Volunteers provide support to daily programs and activities meeting the needs of the members of the Center and Community alike.

This year, seniors were involved in making Dream Sacks, handmade pillowcases that were filled with a storybook, stuffed toy and socks for 60 children who are in the care the Department of Children and Families (DCF). Another project that continues for its fourth year and also supports DCF is the Afghan Project where children receive a handmade personalized afghan when displaced from their home.

As well as making handmade afghans for children, seniors provide cancer patients with an afghan that is given to patients that receive care and treatment at the Smilow Cancer Center at Yale.

An additional venue of community outreach is the Centers senior chorus, Senior Songsters. Throughout the year, they travel on the road to sing at Long Term Care facilities, Adult Daycare Centers, North Haven Schools, and for special events at the Senior Center. This year they were special guests and were asked to sing at the First Selectman's Inaugural event.
