**LEGAL NOTICE**

JANUARY 2021 -- TAXES DUE

TOWN OF NORTH HAVEN

 REAL ESTATE & PERSONAL PROPERTY TAXES for the Town of North Haven (Grand List of October 1, 2019) are due and payable JANUARY 1, 2021 (SECOND INSTALLMENT).  Further, SUPPLEMENTAL MOTOR VEHICLE TAXES are due and payable: JANUARY 1, 2021 (IN-FULL). NOTE: Supplemental bills are issued pursuant to C.G.S. § 12-7.  FAILURE TO RECEIVE A BILL DOES NOT INVALIDATE THE TAX (C.G.S. § 12-130).

 BILLING FOR THE SECOND HALF OF BOTH REAL ESTATE AND PERSONAL PROPERTY TAXES DUE IN JANUARY WILL NOT BE MAILED AGAIN; THE PAYMENT STUB FOR THE SECOND HALVES WERE INCLUDED IN THE JULY BILLING PACKET.

 After February 1, 2021, interest will accrue at the rate of 1½ % per month or fraction thereof (18% per annum) on all unpaid taxes on the 2019 Grand List, and will be computed from January 1, 2021.  Each addition of interest shall become due and collectable and shall be figured on the original amount of tax.  INTEREST CANNOT BE WAIVED (C.G.S. §§ 12-145 & 146). 

 If BACK TAXES are due, payments will be applied to the oldest outstanding bill first; fees, interest, and liens will be paid before principal (if applicable). (C.G.S. § 12-144b).  On each tax bill that becomes delinquent, a minimum interest charge of $2.00 will be collected, per the calculation of the percentage by state statute. (C.G.S. § 12-146).  All delinquent motor vehicle taxes requiring a release for motor vehicle registration should be paid by cash, bank check or money order.  Payments made with a check and/or online require a waiting period of ten (10) days for clearance or proof of the payment to be presented to the Tax Collector’s office, all of which will delay your ability to register with DMV.  IF YOU ARE NOT SURE OF THE PROPER PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING A DMV RELEASE, PLEASE CONTACT THE OFFICE BEFORE YOU COME IN TO PAY.

 THE TAX COLLECTOR’S OFFICE ACCEPTS CASH IN THE LIMITED AMOUNT OF $1,000.00 PER TRANSACTION.

 PLEASE MAKE ALL CHECKS PAYABLE TO:   TAX COLLECTOR, TOWN OF NORTH HAVEN.

 IF YOU PAY BY MAIL:   PLEASE INCLUDE THE APPROPRIATE PORTION OF THE BILL, AND WRITE THE LIST/BILL NUMBER [Example:  2019-MS-XXXXXXX] ON YOUR CHECK.  NO STAPLES PLEASE.  IF YOU PAY WITHIN THE GRACE PERIOD (TIMELY PAYMENT):   FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE AN ENVELOPE HAS BEEN INCLUDED IN WHICH TO MAIL YOUR PAYMENT (ADDRESSED TO:  TAX COLLECTOR, TOWN OF NORTH HAVEN, P.O. BOX 900, HARTFORD, CT 06143-0900).IF YOU PAY AFTER THE GRACE PERIOD (LATE PAYMENT):  PLEASE MAIL YOUR PAYMENT TO THE TAX COLLECTOR’S OFFICE DIRECTLY, LOCATED AT MEMORIAL TOWN HALL, 18 CHURCH STREET, NORTH HAVEN, CT 06473. REQUESTS FOR RECEIPTS SHOULD INCLUDE A STAMPED, SELF-ADDRESSED ENVELOPE.

 PAY YOUR BILLS ONLINE:  IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PAY YOUR TAX BILL(S) ONLINE, PLEASE VISIT: WWW.TOWN.NORTH-HAVEN.CT.US AND LOOK FOR THE LINK TO VIEW AND PAY YOUR TAXES ONLINE.  YOU WILL BE DIRECTED TO A SECURE PAYMENT SITE.  PLEASE BE ADVISED, THERE IS A FEE TO USE THE ONLINE PAYMENT SYSTEM, DEPENDING UPON THE PAYMENT INSTRUMENT UTILIZED: CHECKING & SAVINGS ACCOUNTS, .50 FEE PER TRANSACTION; DEBIT CARD, $3.95 FEE PER TRANSACTION; AND CREDIT CARD, 3% FEE PER TRANSACTION.

 PAYING IN PERSON:  The Tax Collector’s Office (203.239.5321 x 620) is located in Town Hall, 18 Church Street, North Haven, CT.  The office is open daily from 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., except for weekends and legal holidays, and/or COVID-19 RELATED RESTRICTIONS AND/OR CLOSINGS.
